Facts and History about Savannah Hilton Head Airport

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport - All Information on Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV)

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (IATA: SAV) is a commercial and military airport in Savannah, Georgia, that offers access to Savannah, Georgia, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as well as nearby communities including Bluffton and Beaufort, South Carolina, and the Golden Isles region of Coastal Georgia.

The distance between the Historic District and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is 13 kilometers. It is controlled by the Savannah Airport Commission and owned by the City of Savannah.

The Airport's passenger terminal is immediately accessible from Interstate 95 between Savannah and Pooler. Travis Field, Chatham Field, and Savannah International Airport are some of its previous titles.

The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 includes this Airport and is designated a key commercial service airport. The Airport is a part of a Foreign Trade Zone, and U.S. Customs facilities are located on the field.

Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago-O'Hare, Illinois, New York-JFK, Newark, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland, Washington-Dulles, Washington, D.C., and Boston, Massachusetts are among its most popular domestic destinations in 2021.

On September 20, 1929, Eastern Air Express's maiden flight between New York City and Miami marked the opening of the original Savannah Municipal Airport. A local decision from 1932 gave the Airport the name "Hunter Field."

In the middle of the 1930s, Hunter Field's original terminal was a trolley car. The U.S. Army Air Corps suggested in 1940 that Hunter Field should be taken over if a war broke out. Hunter Field was still used by commercial planes. Still, the city chose to construct a second municipal airport since the military used it more often.

Following a Works Progress Administration initiative, the City of Savannah purchased a 600-acre parcel close to Cherokee Hill, one of the county's highest points, and work on a new airport started.

There were three 3,600-foot runways built, ranging northeast-southwest, east-west, and north-south. The U.S. Army Air Corps decided to take over the new facility and begin further building in 1942 before the new Airport was finished to fulfill its goal.

The Airport was given the name Chatham Field. From World War II to the conclusion, it served as a base for B-24 bombers and fighters and a facility for crew training.

The Georgia Air National Guard received control of Chatham Army Airfield in 1948.

Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, a native of Savannah, and his brother Colonel William Travis were killed in a B-29 bomber accident not far from Fairfield-Suisun Air Force Base in California. The Airport was renamed Travis Field in their honor.

Travis Field received a new control tower and an airline terminal for airlines to utilize what was formerly the base theater.

A new airline terminal construction started in 1958. The east-west runway was extended further in 1962, increasing its length to 9,000 feet (2,700 m).

When Delta Air Lines began operating Douglas DC-9-10 flights in 1965, the jet age had officially begun. In 1967, Travis became home to the $7.5 million Gulfstream production facility built by Grumman Aircraft.

A new $21 million terminal building was constructed on the northwest part of the Airport in 1994.

The modern facility took the place of a six-gate terminal constructed in 1960 in 1994. The Airport was renamed Savannah International Airport in 1983 and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in 2003, even though there were no direct international flights then.
