About the Historic District of Savannah
The Savannah Historic District is a significant urban historic district in the United States that correlates to the municipal borders of Savannah, Georgia, before the Civil War.
It is one of the most extensive urban, community-wide historic preservation areas in the United States, having been designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1966.
The neighborhood was named in honor of the Oglethorpe Plan, a novel kind of urban planning initiated by James Oglethorpe at the city's inception and spread during its first century of development.
The layout of the historic sections of Savannah is based on James Oglethorpe's definition of a ward. The center square of each ward was divided into four trust lots and four tythings.
Each trust lot was to be used for a civic purpose, such as a school, government building, church, museum, or other public establishments.
The tythings have been partitioned into ten residential lots. The wards were arranged in a north-to-south and east-to-west rectilinear grid. In a typical neighborhood, the trust lots were arranged east and west of the square.
The tythings' residential lots were enlarged to the north and south of the trust lots and the court. Each consists of two rows of five parcels separated by lanes.
In the early years of the Province of Georgia, the ward system was somewhat military, with each ward's population organized into militia groups and the central squares serving as refugee encampments outside the city walls.
The Savannah Historic District draws millions of tourists each year who appreciate its eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings and open areas.
The district includes the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America; see Juliette Gordon Low Historic District), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (the oldest African American Baptist congregation in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third-oldest synagogue in the United States), the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the old headquarters of the Central of Georgia Railway), and the Central of Georgia Railway.
